spiritual awakening lesson

Let me share with you, 3 Spiritual Awakening Lessons that will change the game immediately for you on your spiritual growth journey. Let me set the scene for you.

I am over twelve years deep into my spiritual awakening journey. I have helped hundreds of people navigate theirs. I am literally writing a book about it. And recently someone sent me hate mail telling me I had no business sharing my awakening experience because “everyone’s journey is unique.”

And you know what that did? It made me want to talk about this even louder.

Because here is the thing. Yes, every awakening is unique. However, there are common symptoms, common phases, and moments of feeling completely unhinged that happen to almost everyone going through this process. Dark night of the soul? Ego death? Identity crisis? Those are not rare occurrences.

They are practically a rite of passage on this hero’s journey we didn’t sign up for.

And the reason I cannot stop talking about spiritual awakening is because over twelve years ago, I was the person who thought she was losing her mind. I was anxious, disoriented, emotionally all over the place, and I had zero roadmap. There was no guide. There was no one saying “hey, this is normal, here is what is happening, here is what to do.”

Crystals were not even trending at Target yet. That is how long ago we are talking ok? 🤣

So if you are in the thick of your messy middle awakening right now and you feel confused, scared, or like your entire reality is being rearranged from the inside out, this one is for you. These are the three lessons I wish someone had handed me at the very beginning, and they would have saved me years of unnecessary suffering.

Spiritual Awakening Lesson 1: What You’re Feeling Is Normal (And It Means You’re Growing)

The first and most important thing I want you to hear, especially if you are new to this, is that what you are experiencing is normal.

The feeling of being off. The sensation that your whole world is being flipped upside down. The moments where you feel crazy, ungrounded, or like the old version of you is dissolving and you are not sure what is replacing it. All of that? Normal. Expected. Even necessary.

Here is the analogy that always lands for me. When children go through physical growth spurts, they experience actual Growing Pains. Their bones are literally growing and it physically hurts. That pain is not a sign that something is wrong. It is a sign the body is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Spiritual awakening is a growth spurt for your entire being, mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. Of course it is going to feel uncomfortable. Of course your ego is going to resist it. You are birthing a new version of yourself and there are contractions involved in that process. (okay maybe we’re getting our analogies a little confused, stay with me)

The problem is that our minds interpret anything unfamiliar as dangerous. So when you are going through rapid, energetic, and psychological changes that your ego has never experienced before, the brain flags it as a threat. You feel unsafe, unstable, maybe even a little unhinged.

That is not a malfunction. That is transformation.

Think about it this way. Being single your whole life and then suddenly being in a committed relationship are two completely different realities. Being child-free and then becoming a mother are two completely different paradigms. Neither one is wrong, but the transition between them is disorienting as anything because your entire frame of perspective is shifting.

Spiritual awakening is that level of paradigm shift, but for your whole identity. So give yourself some grace. You are not losing your mind. You are growing into more conscious awareness, and it’s honestly a beautiful thing.

Spiritual Awakening Lesson 2: Your Ego Is Not the Enemy (It Is Actually Your Amigo)

Repeat after me: My Ego IS MY AMIGO. This one goes against a lot of what gets taught in spiritual spaces and I am going to say it anyway because it changed everything for me.

Stop trying to suppress, shame, or eliminate your ego.

I spent so much of my early awakening journey in the high-vibe-only mentality. Trying to stay positive. Pushing away anything that felt negative, low, dark, or messy. And let me tell you what that created: a cork bottle with too much pressure that eventually just exploded with a desperate need of energy management & emotional regulation skills. Because that is what happens when you suppress emotion. It does not go away. It just waits.

The people in your feed preaching “high vibes only”? Behind closed doors, I can almost guarantee there are emotional meltdowns, reactive moments of snapping at their partner and burnout happening. Because you cannot micromanage your energy forever. Something eventually will collapse.

Here is what actually works: questioning your ego instead of fighting it.

Your ego is not your enemy. Your ego is your Past identity system. Its entire job is to keep you safe and protect you from the unfamiliar. And when you get triggered, when you feel reactive, when a negative emotion surfaces hard, that is not your ego sabotaging you. That is your ego showing you exactly where the unresolved Inner work lives.

I healed my entire relationship with anger this way. For years, there was a lot of shame around anger. I told myself anger was wrong, anger was bad, anger meant something was wrong with me. And so I refused to accept it, which just kept feeding the cycle. The actual healing happened when I stopped beating myself up for feeling angry and just… let it be there. Accepted it. Moved through it. (and now I like to do combat cardio with a few punches for fun – we all evolve somehow 😆)

Acceptance freed the emotion. Suppression just kept it stuck.

So when something triggers you now, instead of spiraling in shame about it, get curious. Ask yourself what you are refusing to see. What is misaligned? What needs your attention? Your ego will show you every single time, if you are willing to look.

Your ego is your amigo. Work with it, not against it.

Spiritual Awakening Lesson 3: Develop Your Relationship With Your Higher Self (This Is the Real Work)

If I could go back to 2012 Ashley and give her one piece of advice, it would be this: stop randomly accumulating spiritual practices and start building a real, personal relationship with your higher self and develop your intuition.

There is a big difference between those two things.

In the early years of my journey, I would have these wild channeling experiences where messages would just pour through me and I had no framework for what was happening. I thought I was just writing random things. I did not realize that what I was actually doing was communicating with my higher self, just in a completely unstructured, accidental way.

Once I understood what that connection actually was and started intentionally cultivating it by developing my intuition better, everything shifted. My intuition sharpened. My decisions improved. I felt more grounded in my body. The scarcity and “never enough” spiral that had been running in the background started to quiet down.

Here is the distinction that matters: it is not about which spiritual practices you do or for how long. It is about what those practices are actually doing, which is bridging the gap between your lower mind and your higher mind.

Your lower mind is your survival brain. Scarcity, fear, “I need to control everything to stay safe.” Most of us live here by default because it is the oldest, loudest part of our brain.

Your higher mind is your soul, your higher self, your connection to higher consciousness and expanded truth. This is where your intuition lives. This is where real clarity comes from.

Every meditation, every journaling session, every walk in nature that drops you into that flow state, all of it is working to bridge those two minds. And the more you develop that bridge intentionally, the more your nervous system regulates, the more your intuition opens, and the more you stop pushing your way through life from a place of survival.

You do not have to have the perfect practice for this. It just has to be yours. Maybe it is morning silence with a cup of coffee. Maybe it is channeled journaling. Maybe it is a run that gets you into flow state. Whatever gets you out of your head and back into connection with something bigger than the fear, that is the practice worth showing up for every day.

Start there. Build from there. Everything else follows.

The Summary Nobody Gave Me at the Beginning

I hope these Spiritual awakening Lessons serve you well.

You are not crazy. You are growing.

Your ego is not your enemy. It is your map to knowing yourself better and emotionally healing.

Your higher self is not somewhere out there. It is the relationship you build, quietly and consistently, every single day as your intuition strengthens.

Spiritual awakening is not meant to be a permanent state of suffering or a never-ending climb toward some distant Enlightenment peak. It is an ongoing, evolving, deeply personal journey of becoming more fully yourself. And there is so much beauty in that, even in the hard parts.

Especially in the hard parts.
